Gregory S. Sullivan, Ph.D., is a teaching professor and director of Positive Coaching and Athletic Leadership in the College of Education & Human Development. His areas of expertise are motivation, servant leadership, positive psychology, and leader and follower well-being.

In his own words: There is an adage that leadership is more caught than taught‚ highlighting the lack of intentionality in leadership education. Leadership education matters because it helps students grow into confident, capable people—ready to take initiative, work well with others, and make a positive impact. Its not just about preparing for a job, but about learning how to think clearly, act with integrity, empower others, and navigate the world with purpose. Through intentional learning, reflection, and practice, students come to understand what it really means to lead in a way thats authentic and effective. Leadership education can provide a deeper understanding of what drives motivation, performance and well-being—not just in others, but in themselves. Students learn how to manage stress, stay focused, build strong relationships, and lead in ways that are both effective and sustainable. A quality leadership education develops students who are self-aware, resilient, and able to understand what kind of leader they want to become.
